Miniatures as Color Studies

Posted by Tosh Fomby on

Since I've restarted larger works and trying to change the texture on flesh, I started small compositions on miniature canvases to practice color, as well as technique. What turned out was actually the only way I could develop the work. You see, miniatures haven't been a common format in the past, especially not anything as small as 4 x 4 inches.

The challenge for miniatures is getting detailed and multiple elements into a small space so that it has the same significance as any larger work I've done. I'm currently stuck on a 4 x 4 foot piece for which the complexion isn't turning out that optimum balance of color, nor texture.

I've also made the miniatures as part of my art practice to work out sections of compositions; determining what I could add for or larger piece.

You could say the directions leans toward Impressionism.
