Tosh Fomby

my story

Southern born. Always been a maker of things. Sock dolls. Paper dolls. Clothes. Pictures. Worked in West Germany, then on to teaching in Taiwan and Saudi Arabia. Once an aspiring writer. Now painting narratives that would have been written.

Studied graphic design. Painting since 2002. Works mostly with acrylics on canvas, wood reliefs and paper cutouts.

Family and personal biography. Humor. 1970s. Black folks. Charles White. Eldzier Cortor. Beverly Buchanon. Fernando Botero. Music. The list is long. Inspiration is all around, through the most casual observations. Conversations. People watching. Simple engagement. The noise around me and sometimes just being quiet.

The work is a memory. That’s the summation of what comes out. A documentation.
